WIT Guest Speaker Dr Adrian Cheok will speak at ITB Asia Convention on October 24 morning. DR ADRIAN CHEOK, Director of the Mixed Reality Lab, National University of Singapore Adrian David Cheok is the Director of the Mixed Reality Lab, National University of Singapore. He is also the Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, where he leads a team of over 20 researchers and students. He has successfully obtained commercial funding for his research projects in mixed reality, human-computer interaction, wearable computers and smart spaces, fuzzy systems, embedded systems, power electronics, and multi-modal recognition. Research output includes numerous academic journal papers, research prototype deliverables, and prototype demonstrations to high standing officials and telecasts by broadcasters such as CNN/CNBC/Discovery/National Geographic. As a result of his research, Adrian has been invited to speak at numerous international and local conferences and events. He has also been invited to exhibit for two years running in the Ars Electronica Museum of the Future, at the Ars Electronica Festival 2003. His works "Human Pacman" and "Magic Land" were selected as one of the world’s top inventions by Wired, from which he was invited to be exhibit at Wired NextFest 2005. In 2005, Adrian was awarded a Microsoft Research Award for Gaming and Graphics. In 2004, he attained a ‘Fellow in Education, World Technology Network’ and was awarded the ‘Associate of the Arts’ award by the Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, Singapore. In that year, Adrian was also invited to be the Singapore representative of the United Nations body IFIP SG 16 on Entertainment Computing. In 2003, Adrian was honored with the Hitachi Fellowship 2003 and the A-STAR Young Scientist of the Year Award 2003. He is the founding and present Chairman of the Singapore Computer Society Special Interest Group on Entertainment Computing, and was privileged to receive the SCS Singapore Young Professional of the Year Award 2004. He was the IEEE Singapore Section Chairman 2003, and is presently ACM SIGCHI Chapter President. Adrian has edited the academic journals ACM Computers in Entertainment, Advances in Human Computer Interaction, International Journal of Arts and Technology (IJART), Journal of Recent Patents on Computer Science, The Open Electrical and Electronic Engineering Journal, Advances in Human Computer Interaction, International Journal of Entertainment Technology and Management (IJEntTM), Virtual Reality (Springer-Verlag), International Journal of Virtual Reality, and The Journal of Virtual Reality and Broadcasting. Prior to his role at NUS, Adrian worked with Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs (Osaka, Japan) on real-time systems, soft computing, and embedded computing. He was born and raised in Adelaide Australia, graduated from the University of Adelaide with a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical and Electronic) with First Class Honors in 1992 and an Engineering PhD in 1998. |
