Singapore-based travel media startup, Trip101 reported an increase in the average number of nights per booking for vacation rentals in major markets like USA, Japan, Canada – from approximately three nights to eight nights – amid global travel restrictions to curb the spread of Covid-19.
The trend emerged just prior to the WHO’s declaration of the pandemic in early-mid March, and the state of emergencies declared by the USA and Japan.
Trip101 states that the findings are in line with a recent increase in long-term bookings, reported by various vacation rental platforms. According to these platforms, hosts are offering longer-term and discounted stays to consumers seeking accommodation since the COVID-19 outbreak began.
Kei Shibata, CEO and co-founder, Trip101 (and LINE Travel jp) explained, “the surge could be related to the number of individuals needing to self-quarantine and tourists who have been stranded under strict travel restrictions.”
