American Airlines iPads to save US$1.2m pa

American Airlines will switch from paper flight charts to iPad tablets, said to save USD1.2 million per year in fuel costs due to the elimination of weight onboard.

Sabre and South African Airways sign new distribution agreement 
South African Airways and Sabre signed a multi-year distribution agreement. The agreement provides Sabre travel agencies and corporations in South Africa and around the world with access to South African’s full range of fares, schedules and availability including published fares sold through the carrier’s own website and reservations offices. 

Sabre Travel Network enters South African market 
Sabre Travel Network announced it has entered the South African market. Sabre’s South African operation has been launched in conjunction with its partners EmQuest – part of the Emirates Group – and African-based Rogers Aviation, which will act as the main distributor in the market. The announcement comes a day after Sabre announced a full-content agreement with South African Airways. Last month the company’s airline business, Sabre Airline Solutions, also signed a reservations agreement with kulula.

Mumbai International Airport joins Twitter and Facebook 
India’s Mumbai International Airport has become the first Indian airport to have a live presence on Facebook and Twitter with the implementation of the service on July 11.

Vueling develops iPhone app 
Vueling, a fast-growing low cost airline in Europe, has developed a new iPhone app, enabling users to book flights to any Vueling destination and take advantage of all added value services offered by the company. The new channel represents a further step towards Vueling’s strategy to establish and consolidate itself in the social networking new channels. In 2008, Vueling launched a mobile portal which was relaunched earlier this year. Vueling stated it is the first European company that presents a fully integrated search engine that users can incorporate into their profiles and use to book flights. Available in nine different languages, “Vueling Search Engine” can be shared to others via blogs or websites via Vueling’s Facebook profile.
