A long, long time ago, Shakespeare said, “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players …”

I don’t think he had social media in mind though when he said this. But his words ne’ver ring truer than now – all the world’s indeed a stage and all of us merely players acting out our “many parts” in full visibility yet invisibility.

The other thing we also know is that Juliet would know where to find her Romeo because today, she’d have a GPS tracking device.

But back to matters of the stage about which I’ve been pondering and how today’s hyper-connected world makes it so easy to become instantly famous in a massive, massive day that would make even Andy Warhorl’s head reel.

Look at Korean rapper Psy with his Gangnam Style video, now the biggest YouTube phenomenon –  more than 345 million views, with Gotye’s Somebody That I Used To Know close behind on 327 million hits. (In the time I wrote this post, it went up by a couple of hundred, I reckon)

What was it about that video that made it so viral that it got talked about on US talk shows, spawned horsy-cats around the world and now Psy is threatening to do it naked in front of a Seoul landmark? Horse forbid.

Every marketing expert will have their considered opinion on why. One told me, “There are many Koreans in America and they were the first Asians to really make an impact in the US. Plus, Kpop is huge.”

One can always rationalize the irrational but if like me, you watched it because everyone else was and you wanted to know why – well, you just fell into the YouTube funnel of mass-hysteriadom.

It reminds me of the man who told me he was reading “Fifty Shades of Grey”, “just to understand why women were so crazy about it”. Ya.

In this season’s “The Voice”, a man named Cupid gets an audition. Cupid also has an instant fame story. His “Cupid Shuffle”dance on YouTube in 2006 also went wildly viral and now has more than 7 million views.

Asked why he wanted to audition on The Voice, he said he was fed up of being seen as this guy who could do nothing but the Cupid Shuffle and that he didn’t want to be a one-hit wonder, which he has become. Everyone just expects him to do the Cupid Shuffle and wants nothing else from him.

Well, guess what song he performed for his audition. Cupid Shuffle. And none of the judges turned around.

It was sad. The very thing that made him instantly famous has put him in a cage that even when he had the opportunity to escape from, did not.

Psy too has expressed similar fears about being pegged as a one-horse-dancer forever.

I am so glad I am not famous.
