Firstly, Singapore travellers prefer to flock with the same-feathered birds – 61% indicated that having similar lifestyle values is the most important characteristic they look for in a travel companion.

And they care less about trustworthiness than fun personality and a caring nature.

Only 39% of respondents indicated that trustworthiness was an important characteristic in a travel buddy, coming in fourth place behind a fun personality (55%) and a caring nature (45%).

Most Singaporean travellers also prefer not to share a room with a smoker or someone with a selfish nature, with about one-third of respondents indicating that each characteristic was unacceptable in a travel companion.

The findings also show that celebrities make desirable travel companions.

If Singaporeans could choose a celebrity to share a hotel room with, they would pick model and actress (left) Maggie Q (16%), followed by local actors Fiona Xie and Pierre Png.

With the exception of movie star Angelina Jolie, most popular Hollywood stars in Singapore such as Ryan Gosling and Robert Downey Jr. did not make it to Singaporeans’ top 10 list of celebrity hotel roommates.

Asia as a destination also featured prominently in the survey. Singaporean travellers picked Bangkok and Taipei as their top destination if they were given a free hotel stay, with both tied for first place at 11%.

Other popular Asian destinations that made it to Singaporeans’ top 10 list include Hong Kong, Seoul and Tokyo.
