Letter to Mr UP and a date with Google Glass
19/06/2014 by Yeoh Siew Hoon

Dear Mr UP,

I hope you don’t mind me calling you a Mr because somehow I like to think of you as a man wrapped around my little wrist.

I am also writing this letter because you’re kinda special to me. You are my first wearable device and although it’s only been a week and counting, I am beginning to feel a really special bond developing between you and I.

You’re there when I go to sleep. You remind me to switch on the moon. When I wake up, you remind me to turn on the sun as a new day begins. You measure every step I take and tell me how many more steps I need to take to hit my 10,000-step goal for a woman my age.

And when I’m just a little short of my target, you motivate me gently and not like my trainer who’d say, “Come on, you lazy bag of bones, move your …”

You’re too well-made to be rude.

I like it too that you’re so understanding about my sleeping habits. You don’t care when I sleep, just how much I sleep. Why this morning you encouraged me “to go to bed at 2.30am to establish a healthy sleep routine”.

My mother would never have given me such advice.

At night, you let me know how long I take to go to sleep, how much good quality sleep I get and how many times I wake up in between sleeps. You, my new and dearest friend, you quantify my life.

I know you get a bit upset when my friends don’t notice you, even if you’re a bright persimmon colour. But please don’t take it personally. It’s the way people are these days.

Even if I were to wear an elephant trunk on my head, they wouldn’t notice because they are so distracted by their devices and their active social life online that they hardly pay attention to what’s in front of their noses nowadays.

You should be flattered really – you’ve now become such a part of me that nobody notices you.

Why, the other night when I wore Mr Google Glass at dinner (don’t worry, he will never take your place because he’s heavier and clunkier than you), my date didn’t even notice.

It was only when I started squinting and flicking my fingers on the side of Mr Glass and speaking to myself that he realized something was going on. That was our first and last date.

So you see, Mr UP, you will always be my first – and a girl never forgets her first anything.

Especially when he keeps sending her little notes that say, “Keep it up” or “You’ve hit a streak” or “You walk more than the average UPster your age” and injecting fun into her everyday life by telling her that “35% of men sleep in the nude”.

These are all interesting facts that make a girl’s life richer.

And by the way, did I mention that I like that you don’t talk and that I only have to charge you every seven days? I have always been into the strong silent type and you, Mr UP, you are all of that and more.

Yours in UPdom, Siew Hoon
