White Beach in Boracay (pictured) heads the top 10 list for Asia in TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards for Beaches 2014, followed by two in India – Radhanagar Beach on Havelock Island and Agonda Beach in Agonda.
In its second year the awards recognise more than 322 beaches globally, including top lists for Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, South America, the South Pacific and the U.S.
For the rest of the world the choice beaches are more widespread, with the top 10 in countries including Brazil to Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Seychelles, Australia and Wales.
Brazil’s Baia do Sancho in Fernando de Noronha is judged the best in the world, with Grace Bay in Turks and Caicos, and Flamenco Beach in Puerto Rico in second and third place respectively.
The travel site said on average the beaches on the world list have seen a 166% increase year-over-year in share of international search traffic between January 20 to February 19.
The winners were determined based on the quality and quantity of traveller reviews and ratings for beaches on TripAdvisor gathered over a 12-month period.
Barbara Messing, TripAdvisor’s chief marketing officer, said, “For those planning their next holiday destination by the sand and sea, these award-winning beaches serve as inspiration.”
