Wego’s bright green alien is adorable. He’s also a highly strategic tool.

“He makes the Wego brand emotionally resonant across audiences and markets. He cuts through the noise in a way traditional ads or logos never could.”

“The idea for Weegio came from a very real need,” Roxana Nicolescu, VP Brand Marketing & Social Media, told WiT soon after the introduction of Weegio. “In a travel industry that’s crowded and competitive, we knew we needed something fresh, something that would stand out and make Wego instantly recognisable. A logo alone doesn’t create memories, but a character can.”

For Nicolescu, Weegio isn’t just another campaign. “People connect with people, or in this case, a pint-sized alien explorer who embodies curiosity, excitement, and the joy of discovery,” she explained. “When we imagined him, we knew we needed someone who understands tech and travel, who can speak any language, and who can make the impossible possible. He’s an alien, after all.”

Weegio is instantly tied to Wego’s brand identity. “Of course, he’s the same bright green as our brand, making him instantly and unmistakably Wego,” Nicolescu said.

But more importantly, he serves as a bridge between the company and its audience. “Weegio was designed to humanise the brand, to give Wego a voice and a personality that travellers could actually relate to,” she said. “He’s not corporate, he’s curious. He shares the same frustrations and joys that travellers do, which makes him feel more like a companion than a campaign.”

That relatability, Nicolescu added, has commercial sense too. “At the same time, Weegio helps us optimise costs. Instead of creating entirely new campaigns from scratch every time, we now have a flexible character who can be adapted across all touchpoints, whether that’s videos, images, memes, animations, travel tips, or even merch and AR filters.”

In other words, the consistency of a recognisable face matters. “He simplifies storytelling, making it easier and more affordable to produce content that still resonates deeply with audiences,” she said.

A magnet for new audiences

Weegio’s design makes him naturally adaptable. “Because Weegio is designed to be expressive, humorous, and approachable, he can ‘speak’ multiple cultural and linguistic languages effortlessly, helping us connect with travellers everywhere in a way that feels authentic,” she noted.

“So really, Weegio is more than a mascot – he’s a strategic tool. He attracts, he differentiates, he gives us room to grow, and he makes the Wego brand not only recognisable, but emotionally resonant across audiences and markets,” she said.

Wego sees Weegio not as a one-off stunt but as a central pillar of its future growth strategy. “On one hand, he’s a magnet to attract new demographics and open doors in new markets. At the same time, he’s also about refreshing the brand and making Wego feel more alive, more relatable, and more memorable in a crowded travel space,” she explained. “He gives us creative license to explore new directions – whether that means extending into other sister brands or even building out a whole family of characters in the future.”

That last line – reminiscent of a post-credits scene at the end of a Marvel movie – is oddly satisfying; the possibility of a whole crew of Weegios out there in the vastness of space, waiting to travel to Earth.

Roxana Nicolescu, Chief Marketing Officer of Wego: “We’re already weaving him into the product experience today. You’ll see Weegio popping up across different touchpoints inside the app, on the web, and we keep discovering new placements where he can add value, always making sure it feels natural and never overdone.”

Standing out in the Middle East

For Wego, launching Weegio in the Middle East was deliberate. “With so many OTAs competing for attention, differentiation is everything, and that’s where Weegio gives us a real edge,” Nicolescu said.

“This is the very first time in the Middle East that a travel brand has launched a character like this,” she pointed out. “Globally there are only a handful of travel companies that have done anything similar. That novelty alone makes people stop and take notice.”

Weegio’s bold design helps. “You can’t really scroll past a bright-green, out-of-this-world character without pausing,” she said. “His alien appearance is instantly recognisable, his voice is quirky and different, and together with his humor and his mission to make travel easier and more fun, he cuts through the noise in a way traditional ads or logos never could.”

“So while other OTAs are competing on the same old levers – price, deals, discounts – we’re adding another layer: personality,” Nicolescu added.

More than a mascot

Of course, with the introduction of any potentially interactive character these days, one has to wonder if AI will power his actions in the future – a travel-planning alien, maybe? “Absolutely, we see Weegio evolving into more tech-savvy roles over time,” Nicolescu said. “His whole character is built on curiosity and problem-solving, so it’s only natural that he could become a travel planner, a price-checker, or even an AI assistant to help travellers in smarter ways.”

That evolution has already begun. “We’re already weaving him into the product experience today,” she explained. “You’ll see Weegio popping up across different touchpoints inside the app, on the web, and we keep discovering new placements where he can add value, always making sure it feels natural and never overdone.”

“That’s the beauty of having a character like Weegio: he’s flexible enough to simplify complex features, explain them in a fun way, and eventually even help travellers plan their journeys step by step,” Nicolescu said. “He’s not just our mascot anymore,” Nicolescu said. “He’s becoming a bridge between complex travel technology and everyday travellers.”

The data behind the decisions

Weegio isn’t being built in a vacuum – his launch coincides with big shifts in travel demand across the Middle East. “We’re constantly fascinated by the shifts we’re seeing in travel behaviors across the region, and a few of those trends have really taken us by surprise this year,” Nicolescu said.

“In Saudi Arabia, a whopping 78.8% of bookings this summer were for solo travellers – that’s nearly four in five trips,” she noted. “Domestic travel is also having a major moment, with local tourism in Saudi capturing 35% of all bookings this summer, up 5.7 percentage points year-over-year.”

Egypt is another standout. “Bookings from the GCC to Egypt rose 12% year-over-year, driven by Egyptians stepping up their offerings and showing off not just the Pyramids, but beaches, wellness retreats, adventure zones, you name it,” Nicolescu said.

Ramadan also shifted behaviors. “Flight searches from the UAE jumped 32.5% year-on-year, with countries like Nepal (a staggering +214.8%) and Pakistan (+82.7%) seeing massive interest, despite rising airfares,” she shared.

And travellers are casting their eyes further afield. “While Italy and the UK are still favorites, Vietnam saw a jaw-dropping 322% increase in interest from Saudis, thanks to new halal-friendly resorts and much-improved air connectivity,” Nicolescu said. “Armenia surged too after visa waivers were introduced, with search interest up 143%.”

Planning for 2026

With these insights, Wego is planning its next steps. “One of Wego’s biggest strengths is the volume of travel data we sit on – millions of searches, bookings, and behaviour signals across the region,” Nicolescu said. “For us, this isn’t just numbers, it’s a compass.”

“We’re using it to understand where demand is heading for 2026: which destinations are emerging, what kind of trips people want, whether it’s solo travel, family packages, or long weekend getaways, and how economic shifts are shaping booking habits,” she explained.

“That helps us work with partners, airlines, and tourism boards to be ready with the right inventory, the right offers, and the right payment solutions at the right time,” Nicolescu said.

Weegio, too, is evolving with the data. “2025 was really about introducing him to the world and building recognition,” she said. “In 2026, his role gets even bigger, and we see him stepping into more tech-savvy spaces.

“So, in short, Wego is using the data to anticipate what travelers will need in 2026, and Weegio is our way of bringing those solutions to life in a fun, human—and sometimes alien—way.”
