AirAsia MOVE bets on event tourism, fans who fly to catch a show

The airline’s new MOVETIX bundle pairs flights with official event tickets, launching with Djakarta Warehouse Project 2026 as event-driven travel demand climbs across the region.

AirAsia MOVE has launched a bundle that combines flights and official event tickets into a single booking, aiming to simplify travel planning for fans who build trips around concerts, festivals and other live events.

The first rollout pairs tickets to Djakarta Warehouse Project (DWP) 2026, one of Southeast Asia’s largest electronic dance music festivals, with flights to Jakarta. It runs through MOVETIX, AirAsia MOVE’s dedicated events platform, in partnership with DWP organiser Ismaya Group. A general admission ticket bundled with a return flight from Kuala Lumpur starts from MYR1,300, with AirAsia MOVE citing savings of up to 20% compared with booking flights and tickets separately.

The data behind the bundle

The launch is grounded in booking patterns AirAsia MOVE says it has observed internally. Ravi Shankar Mallavarapu, Chief Marketing Officer of AirAsia MOVE, told WiT, “The launch of the AirAsia MOVE event + flight bundle is rooted in a broader shift we are seeing in how people travel. Our traveller and booking data shows that live events are increasingly becoming a catalyst for travel, with travel intent around major concerts, festivals and other live events in the region increasing by 10–20%.”

Hassan Choudhury, Head of MOVETIX, pointed to the same underlying shift, where the event itself, rather than the destination, is becoming the reason people travel.

“People are no longer simply buying a ticket to an event, increasingly, the event itself is the reason for the journey,” Ravi said. He added, “These are high-intent travellers who already have a strong desire to travel for a particular concert or event and are actively considering how to make that trip happen. This creates an opportunity for AirAsia MOVE to connect the different parts of that journey in a more seamless way, bringing flights and event tickets together while giving organisers access to an audience with a genuine travel intent.”

It’s a distinction AirAsia MOVE uses to quantify the quality of the audience it can connect them with.

AirAsia MOVE frames the up to 20% savings as a result of bundling efficiency rather than a discount absorbed by either party. “It is not simply about one party absorbing a discount; the proposition is designed around the combined value of the bundle,” Ravi said, noting that actual savings vary by booking. “More importantly, we see this as part of the evolution of AirAsia MOVE from a platform where people book travel to one that helps shape the reasons people travel in the first place.”

DWP is AirAsia MOVE’s first event + flight bundle, and the company is treating it as a learning exercise ahead of a wider rollout. Ravi called it “an important opportunity to learn from traveller behaviour and demonstrate the value this can create for both travellers and event organisers,” with plans to bring on more organisers, particularly those with an established fly-in audience, where the link between the event and travel is strongest.

Beyond that, AirAsia MOVE has not disclosed specific targets for the number of organisers or bundles it expects to add over the coming year.

“DWP is our first launch and an important opportunity to learn from traveller behaviour and demonstrate the value this can create for both travellers and event organisers,” Ravi said. “We are looking forward to working with more organisers, particularly those with a strong fly-in audience, where the connection between the event and travel is most meaningful.”

An established festival gets a new booking channel

For Ismaya Group, the partnership extends a festival that has already built an international following over 18 years. Co-founder Christian Rijanto said DWP regularly draws fans from across Asia, Australia and Europe, and that the bundle lets a fan in Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok book tickets and flights for the festival in one place for the first time.

AirAsia MOVE said the bundle model will eventually extend beyond music, pointing to sporting events and cultural experiences as other categories where event-led travel is growing across Asean, though it has not named specific events or verticals it plans to prioritise next.
