Everyone I know in the OTA corporate development space, VCs and travel-focused angels (and many people I don’t) have been contacting me for information about the Indonesian online market.
OTA Greenfield
From a travel perspective, it’s really still a greenfield and could be anyone’s game. My money is on a venture funded company led by a strong local Indonesian team similar to the India and China markets versus a global OTA making it big. The existing offline agencies all want to lead in online but thus far have struggled to step up to the investments in people, technology, and business process change required.
Metasearch?
The Indonesian market is also prime for a Qunar-type metasearch play. The fragmentation of both domestic air and hotel content make this market one of the largest and most attractive untapped metasearch opportunities on the planet. I don’t think a foreign meta-search play will make it – it will require a local-based ground up team.
Scott Blume, the former CEO of ZUJI, who is now developing his hand as an Angel Investor, recently forwarded me this short but effective primer on the Indonesian online market. It’s six months old and already a bit dated – but still a great resource for someone looking for a quick market landscape profile.
