More Chinese online shoppers than there are people living in the USA

Some 52.5% of Chinese Internet users now shop online, that’s about 332 million in total – and that’s more than the population of the US (313.9 million).

That datapoint was shared by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), Shang Bing, at Beijing’s annual China Internet Conference this week.

Other statistics shared, according to QQ Tech

• Internet penetration is at 46.9 percent.

• China has 632 million internet users and 527 million of them access the internet on mobile devices. The number of people in China accessing the internet via mobile surpassed the number accessing it via PC for the first time this year.

• 30 percent of China’s internet users are now on broadband connections of at least 8Mbps or higher. Nearly 54 million are connected via fiber-optic cable.

• 40 percent of all mobile users subscribe to 3G or 4G mobile services.

• Since 2013, China’s internet sector has undergone more than 30 mergers and acquisitions each worth over US$100 million.
