Firefly flies into Foursquare

Firefly, Malaysia’s only community airline, has made history of sorts by being the first company in the country and the second airline in the world to have a page on Foursquare, the location-based social network.

Checking in to Firefly on Foursquare reveals useful tips near the airport or destination you are at. No more trampling around looking for WiFi spots as Foursquare will “direct” you there. Yearning for your favourite “char kuey teow” or a piece of cheese cake? Foursquare will show you where to find them.

(Foursquare is a social network that combines friend-finder and social city guide elements. Users are rewarded for checking into venues such as restaurants and shops and provide their own tips to other users.)

With more than 80,000 check-ins every day in Malaysia and four million daily check-ins globally, Foursquare is a significant trend in social networking, said Firefly’s head of marketing and communications, Angelina Corrina Fernandez.

“We have ventured to this medium because location-based services are essential tools in travel and also to engage increasingly mobile customers. This service enhances their travel experience and enables us to provide customers with special promotions based on the frequency of their visit. We believe that this service will empower us to develop more ongoing relationships with our customers.”

Fernandez added that Foursquare not only calls attention to users at venues, but also to those who are across the street or two blocks away.

Firefly is also using Foursquare to promote its offers creatively and reach out to all official Foursquare mobile clients via the iPhone, Blackberry and Android based devices.
