Raffles blends heritage and innovation for a new chapter in Sentosa
19/09/2025 by Arvindh Yuvaraj

Just six months after opening its doors, Raffles Sentosa Singapore has already positioned itself as one of the world’s most distinctive luxury destinations. The country’s first and only all-villa resort has gathered international accolades – Prix Versailles, Architectural Digest, and Oprah Daily among them – while also reviving one of the city-state’s most storied names in hospitality.

For Cavaliere Giovanni Viterale, Cluster General Manager of Raffles Sentosa Singapore and Sofitel Singapore Sentosa, the recognition is not just about architecture and design but about Singapore’s evolving role in global hospitality. “Singapore has long been known for design excellence, innovation and world-class service, and this recognition reinforces that reputation.,” he said.

The recognition, he added, is bigger than a trophy for the mantelpiece. “These accolades show that Singapore is not just keeping pace with global luxury trends but it’s helping to define them,” he said. “As a homegrown brand, Raffles is proud to be part of this story.”

The architecture of balance

The resort, which officially opened in March 2025, has quickly become known for its design. On the surface, it’s a study in contrasts: a restored colonial-era building that houses the spa, surrounded by modernist villas spread across 100,000 square metres of Sentosa greenery. For Viterale, this wasn’t a contradiction, but a deliberate choice.

“We are deeply committed to preserving the Raffles legacy while evolving to meet the needs of today’s discerning travellers,” Viterale said. “The spa, housed in a beautifully restored heritage building, pays tribute to a chapter in Singapore’s architectural history,” he explained. “Rather than replace it, the building has been revitalised, preserving its character while adapting it for a modern wellness experience.”

It’s a strategy that marries nostalgia with newness. “Our villas reflect a modern aesthetic, with clean lines, generous space, and a strong connection to nature,” he said. “Throughout the resort, we’ve aimed to blend tradition with innovation in a way that feels seamless. It’s about presenting the timeless spirit of Raffles through a modern lens, allowing guests to enjoy both the comfort of heritage and the freshness of new experiences,” he added.

That balance also requires discipline. “We’ve taken a deliberate approach: maintaining the hallmarks of Raffles’ gracious hospitality of the butler, attention to detail, and a strong sense of place, while introducing contemporary experiences such as personalised wellness journeys, immersive dining, and curated guest programmes,” he said. “This allows us to remain authentic, yet forward-looking.”

“The goal is to ensure we continue to resonate with each new generation of guests.”

The Wellbeing Butler experiment

While the architecture draws headlines, it’s the service model that Viterale believes will keep guests returning. Central to that is the role of the Wellbeing Butler – a new twist on Raffles’ signature butler tradition. It’s a service philosophy that aims to anticipate rather than simply respond.

“Luxury at Raffles Sentosa Singapore is more than just beautiful spaces, it’s about thoughtful, intuitive service that creates meaningful connections,” Viterale said, adding that “Our Wellbeing Butlers take the time to understand each guest’s unique preferences, curating experiences that align with their personal wellness goals, interests and pace. Whether it’s designing a tailored spa journey, organising a mindful nature walk, or arranging quiet moments of reflection, every detail is considered with care.”

The green imperative

Increasingly, that resonance and luxury come with an expectation of sustainability. “Sustainability is a core part of how Raffles Sentosa Singapore was conceived and built,” Viterale said. “As Singapore’s only all-villa resort, and located on Asia’s first GSTC-certified island, we’re proud to be part of a destination that prioritises responsible tourism.”

He went into detail: “The resort is Green Mark Gold certified, and we’ve made deliberate choices to reduce our environmental footprint: from electric buggies and solar-powered lighting to energy-efficient systems and locally sourced produce.”

Even the bar has been recruited into the cause. “Our signature Raffles Sentosa Sling is crafted using upcycled ingredients and lemon leaves grown in our own edible garden,” he said.

The March 1 opening was marked in typically symbolic fashion. “When we officially opened on March 1, 2025, we commemorated Singapore’s 60th anniversary with the planting of 60 trees across the property, including rare native species like the Seashore Mangosteen,” he said. “Over time, these will form a green archway leading guests into the resort.”

For him, the resort’s URA award-winning spa building embodies this ethos. “Our heritage spa further reflects our belief in sustainable luxury, where preserving the past is integral to building a better future,” he said.

A distinct Sentosa identity

With Sentosa already home to a roster of luxury hotels, differentiation was crucial. “Raffles Sentosa stands apart as Singapore’s first and only all-villa resort, offering a level of privacy, space, and seclusion that’s rare in the city,” Viterale said. “Each villa comes with its own private pool and outdoor terrace, creating a true sense of escape, without ever having to leave the country.”

The setting reinforces that feeling. “Set within 100,000 square metres of lush greenery, the resort is designed to feel like a sanctuary,” he said. “What truly distinguishes us, though, is the highly personalised service led by our Raffles butlers and wellbeing butlers.”

Post-pandemic, he argued, privacy has become the ultimate luxury. “We’ve seen a growing demand for space, privacy, and wellness, needs that are central to our resort design,” Viterale said. “In today’s fast-paced world, guests are placing increasing value on time – time to pause, reconnect with loved ones, and experience nature in a meaningful way.”

A culinary story

Food, of course, is another part of the narrative. With five distinct dining venues, the challenge is not to lose the Singaporean spirit. “While our dining experiences span a range of global cuisines, they’re always grounded in our Singaporean roots,” Viterale said.

“Whether it’s a fresh interpretation of a local favourite or a classic international dish with a Singaporean twist, we approach every concept with authenticity and care,” he explained. “Being part of a global brand doesn’t mean losing our identity, it gives us the platform to share Singapore’s vibrant culinary heritage with the world.”

On the horizon

As for what comes next, Viterale is thinking beyond occupancy rates. “Our goal is to position Raffles Sentosa Singapore as a new benchmark for luxury hospitality, both within the region and globally,” he said. “More than just a place to stay, we aim to be a destination in our own right.”

That will mean more emphasis on experiences over amenities. “We’re continuing to refine and enhance the guest experience, with a strong focus on wellness, immersive programming, and curated stays that invite guests to explore more of what Singapore has to offer,” he said.

Ultimately, Viterale keeps returning to the same idea: a hospitality that lingers. “We want our guests to feel they’ve discovered something truly special,” he said. “And to leave with memories that last well beyond their stay.”
