The demand for travel is there. Affordability is what’s broken.

What does it actually take to get more people across Southeast Asia traveling, and is the industry doing enough to make it happen?

Nadia Omer, CEO of AirAsia Move, spoke to WiT about how AI is reshaping the platform while pointing to data hygiene as an essential part of MOVE’s process. “We realized that there was data which was not in a very structured way, once we want to move towards AI, we really need to clean up the data,” she said. The push toward AI has essentially forced the team to think about how they distill their vast amounts of user data into something meaningful, and Nadia explains how that’s changed the way they think about building products for their 50 million annual users.

On the ASEAN market, Nadia says the real gap is not a lack of demand. She calls out affordability as the single biggest barrier between people who want to travel and people who actually do. Several untapped traveller demographics came up in the conversation too, from Gen Z to women traveling solo, and she has a clear view on what’s holding them back and what it would take to bring them in.

Nadia also weighed in on how geopolitical disruptions, including the ongoing situation in the Middle East, are shifting travel patterns across the region right now, and what AirAsia MOVE is doing to stay agile.
