Tips for the new romance of 2014
12/12/2013 by Yeoh Siew Hoon

So if you were to ask me what I will remember most about 2013, I’d say it’s the year Asia truly came of age. Sure, she’s been noticed before. People have whispered about her attraction. The people who know her well already know that she’s special. But I am now talking big-time, mass-scale, global-level kind of attention.

Suddenly, she’s the belle of the ball. Everyone wants to dance with her. Everyone wants to court her. Everyone wants to have a relationship with her. She’s the new-ish girl on the block.

The other girls have aged, run out of money, ran up too much debt, become too stuck in their ways … she’s younger, dare I say firmer, more exciting, full of promise and possibilities – someone you think you can mould perhaps; feel you can build a new future with in a land of plenty.

But like with all new romances, it comes fraught with danger. How do you ensure the romance lasts, that it’s not just a one-night stand or you make a commitment only to have a bust-up soon after and your heart broken (and your pockets emptier)? How do you ensure a happy-ever-after kind of ending?

Well, in the spirit of Christmas, which is about giving, I thought I’d share some tips on how to woo and win the girl and live happily ever after.

1.     Remember she’s many girls-in-one. A girl is never just one persona. She’s several. Depends on her moods. Don’t call her diverse. Fragmented. “It’s complicated” says it better. Yet at heart, despite the different personas, she’s a simple girl – she wants everything everyone wants – trust, respect, honesty. A sense of humour helps.

2.     Don’t just focus on her figure. Remember, figures may look good one day but not so good on another. There are such things as crash diets these days. Feel out the intangibles – her values, ethics, passion for what she does – and let her know you care about those too. Yes, a good figure helps in the initial attraction but remember, a true partnership has to go beyond what you can see and measure.

3.     Don’t buy her one expensive dinner and expect her to put out for you. There are some suitors who expect an immediate return on investment. Doesn’t work for Ms Asia, not if you want to build something real.

4.     Court her appropriately. Remember, different girls want different things. Some like to drink. Some like to dance. Some like to sing. Some like things. Better make sure you have a varied repertoire at your disposal to do what it takes if you really want the girl.

5.     Let’s say you’ve got past first base. You’re in a relationship. You’ve made a commitment, she’s the one. Well, continue to respect her experience and independence. After all, she got through much of her life without you. Let her do what she does best. Support her. Don’t douse the very spirit which attracted you to her in the first place. A sense of humour helps.

6.     Always, always, remember to appreciate her. Just because you’ve won her doesn’t mean you have won. Compliment her every now and then. At this point, you may talk about her figure – it is after all what attracted you to her in the first place. So best to keep it real. No figure, no cry.

7.     Lastly, don’t overdo the selfies. It may be the word of the year but girls don’t like boys who are overly-narcissistic.

Happy Holidays. A sense of humour helps.
