The online travel scene for the last month of 2012 remains more or less consistent in Australia and New Zealand with the major players retaining their positions. In China, however, the main OTAs battle for top spot with Trip.taobao.com emerging triumphant.(Full report below and in slides).
Australia
- The online travel scene in Australia remained consistent for the month of December 2012, with Wotif.com (13.34%) maintaining its stronghold over Webjet Australia (12%) and Expedia Australia (8.79%).
- Similarly, TripAdvisor Australia (9.02%) also continued its reign in the destination and accommodation space for the second month running, while Booking.com and TripAdvisor continued to trail behind.
- Over in the commercial airline sector, things remained relatively volatile for the second consecutive month. Jetstar (20.4%) snagged the top spot away from Qantas (19.04%), having lost the placing to the latter in November.
New Zealand
Expedia.co.nz manages to retain its title as the top online travel agency in New Zealand with 10.42% share of visits, marginally tipping Webjet New Zealand (10.33%) and Wotif.com (9.88%) off the scale.
- TripAdvisor (7.78%) continues to lead the pack as the top destination and accommodation website in the month of December, with Booking.com and stuff.co.nz coming in close behind.
- Air New Zealand evidently reigns supreme in the commercial airline space, with both its standard (38.26%) and “grabaseat” (22.54%) carriers composing majority share of visits.
China
- Trip.taobao.com (25.10%) jumped a spot to take the lead as the top online travel agency in China, while previously first-placed Ctrip.com (8.49%) dropped two spots to take the third position.
- MaFengWo continues to dominate the destination and accommodation category with a whopping 25.88% share of visits, while Mayi.com (8.55%) and hotels.ctrip.com (8.25%) trailed far behind.
- The commercial airlines sector remained unchanged for the month of December – China Southern Airlines (20.89%), China Eastern Airlines (15.36%), Air China (14.25%), AirAsia (10.70%), Shenzhen Airlines (10.04%).
