WIT 2010: A student’s perspective
28/10/2010 by Zubair Ashraf

As one of the volunteers at the Web In Travel, I experienced two interesting and energetic days at the conference. I, along with other student volunteers, was in charge of social media.

It was my first time attending a conference like this. We tweeted during the conference using their WITcast technology – the comments would be projected on the big screen from time to time. Content covered things related to what speakers were saying on stage and current tourism industry news.

I tried my best to digest what the speakers said and commented at the same time on the Twitter feed #webintravel.

It was an interesting but challenging job, for I had to listen attentively and think fast. At the same time, I enriched my knowledge of tourism industry and learned valuable experiences from guest speakers.

Since I am from China, I personally found the China session very interesting.

As one of the guest speakers pointed out, China has several “YouTube”-like websites, and each of them is bigger than YouTube.

Elong’s CEO Cui Guang Fu said, if anyone found a hotel which was not in Elong, he would be able to get it listed immediately, showing the transparency now inherent in the industry and the growing influence of customers.

I want to thank WIT for giving me the precious opportunity to participate in this fantastic event. I had such a great experience. Most of all, I enjoyed talking with delegates and was impressed by their easy going personalities. And I tweeted so much news about tourism that Lonely Planet started to follow me on Twitter, and making new friends with the volunteers, and a lot more.

Two days work is short, but I have a deeper insight about this industry, networked with “big people”, made new friends and we had fun! I’m so looking forward to the WIT conference 2011.
