Malaysia–based low cost hotel chain, Tune Hotels, will open Tune Hotel Melbourne on November 1, marking the brand’s foray into Australia and New Zealand.

The 225-room hotel, located at 609 Swanston Street, Carlton, is next to University of Melbourne, just two streets away from popular Lygon Street, popularly referred to as “Litle Italy” and minutes to Melbourne’s Central Business District.
Tune Hotel Melbourne was launched in Kuala Lumpur on June 17 in the presence of the visiting Premier of Victoria, Dr Denis Napthine, who is leading a Super Trade Mission to South East Asia. Kuala Lumpur was the mission’s first stop.
To celebrate its opening Tune Hotel Melbourne is offering promotional room rates from A$49 per night for a basic room. The promotion is offered only online.
This latest property brings the group’s hotel inventory to 30 since its launch in 2007 with its first hotel in Downtown Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It currently has 11 hotels in Malaysia, one in India, five in the UK, and four each in the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia.
Tune Hotels’ group CEO Mark Lankester said he was excited about the new property in Melbourne as it marks the brand’s entry into Australia and New Zealand.
He also announced that Melbourne would be Tune Hotels’ operational headquarters for Australia and New Zealand, working in conjunction with the corporate office in Kuala Lumpur. .
“Given our long term plans for the region, the Australia and New Zealand headquarters will be staffed relevantly to oversee and provide central support to Tune Hotels’ properties in Australia and New Zealand,” added Lankester.

The company plans to have three to four hotels in Melbourne, with Sydney next on its sight.
Dr Napthine welcomed the decision by Tune Hotels to set up its Australia and New Zealand operational headquarters in Melbourne.
“Together, the investment is expected to create up to 100 jobs,” he added.
On Tune Hotels’ expansion plans Lankester revealed Japan is the other country it is planting its flag on, with the opening of a hotel in Okinawa in August this year. Within Malaysia the group plans to increase its current 11 hotels to 30. It is looking at spreading its wings to 14 countries and increasing hotel count to 76 in the near future.
The group has received almost five million guests since the opening of its first hotel in Kuala Lumpur.
Meanwhile Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, Tune Group founder and AirAsia Bhd group CEO, said the group’s long-haul carrier AirAsia X had served the Melbourne route for more than four years now, becoming one of its best-selling routes.
“We are sure the Australian market will welcome and embrace Tune Hotels as they did AirAsia X,” he said.
