Axe to fall on MAS staff as airline appoints new administrator

MAS aircraftMalaysia Airlines’ owner Khazanah Nasional Bhd has appointed Datuk Mohammad Faiz Azmi as administrator for Malaysian Airline System Bhd (MAS) with immediate effect, as it transitions to the new company as Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAB).

Consulting and audit firm PricewaterhouseCoopers will send out termination letters to about 6,000 staff who are being laid off as part of the airline’s 12-point RM6 billion (US$1.66 billion) restructuring plan to return it to profitability.

Environmentalists concerned about development of Mergui

merguiDevelopment must happen with careful consideration of environmental aspects, cautioned environmental groups, when Myanmar announced it will give the go-ahead for new hotels to be developed in Mergui, the southernmost archipelago, by year-end.

While acknowledging the benefits of such development plans, environmentalists have urged the government to establish environmental guidelines for the developers.
