In every crisis, an opportunity – travel companies show how to seize them
30/04/2020 by Yeoh Siew Hoon

Although this favourite of Western political leaders and motivational speakers has been widely debunked – the one that explains that the Chinese word for crisis is made of characters that mean both opportunity and danger – we still like it.

And we are certainly seeing evidence of it during this Covid crisis, especially among hard-hit travel companies. Call it pivoting (a popular corporate buzzword these days), innovation, or opportunistic marketing, it is oft-times just about survival.

Here are a few good ones, starting with destination marketers who want us to keep dreaming, and then visit later.

Destination NSW
Destination NSW’s consumer travel website, VisitNSW.com, has unveiled a suite of still and video Zoom-ready assets available for consumers to download for their conference calls.

“The Zoom background collection was curated to inspire wanderlust in the dreaming phase of the travel planning cycle, with NSW backgrounds curated around three key themes – native animals, sunrise and sunset, and spectacular scenery.”

Germany
With the launch of the #DiscoverGermanyFromHome campaign, virtual tourists can now “walk through” all 16 federal states of Germany from the comfort of their own homes. The #DiscoverGermanyFromHome microsite is live here.

Hotels have also come up with some new ways to keep up customer engagement.

Africa
Book Africa Travel is selling hour-long virtual tours of various places, complete with a local tour guide to discuss via a video link, history, culture, language, food, and an opportunity to interact with the guide during the session.

“We are beyond excited and ready to help you discover Africa like never before. Although people feel like they’re stuck at home right now, they can escape with our Virtual Africa Experience excursions,” said Anne Etim, co-founder, Book Africa Travel.

“We’ve had great interest in the tours and it’s live for booking. Once restrictions are lifted, travellers can book a physical tour in that African country with the same local tour guides on our platform,” added Nsidibe Etim, Book Africa Travel’s co-founder.

Hotels and tour operators have also found opportunities to do something different to keep customer engagement active and alive.

Fairmont Singapore and Swissôtel The Stamford
These two city hotels are offering recipe kits, each consisting of ingredients and easy-to-follow step by step instructions to cook favourite dishes from popular restaurants at both hotels. #FairmontandSwissotelFoodAtHome recipe kits are the perfect option for foodies and enthusiastic home cooks, and dishes can be whipped up in as little as 15 minutes. Each kit comes with a complimentary side of Aquaponics salad, fresh from its farm. New recipes are launched weekly at www.celebrationscentral.com.sg.
