Southeast Asia’s aviation industry has taken a significant hit due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with an estimated loss of $17 billion in revenue in 2020, according to a report by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). However, the ADB has proposed a range of strategies to aid in the post-pandemic recovery of the industry, including boosting domestic tourism and adopting digital solutions.
The report, entitled “Southeast Asia Aviation in the Time of COVID-19: An Assessment of the Current Situation and Post-Pandemic Strategies,” identified a variety of factors that have contributed to the decline of the region’s aviation industry. These include travel restrictions, border closures, and reduced consumer confidence, as well as the industry’s heavy reliance on international travel.
One key strategy proposed in the report is to increase domestic air travel demand to improve the resilience of the industry. The ADB suggested that governments in the region could encourage domestic tourism by providing financial incentives to travelers, promoting local destinations, and investing in airport infrastructure.
Additionally, the ADB called for improved collaboration among key stakeholders, such as governments, airlines, airports, and tourism agencies, to strengthen the aviation ecosystem. The report recommended establishing a Southeast Asia Aviation Recovery Task Force to coordinate recovery efforts and provide policy guidance to governments in the region.
The adoption of digital solutions to facilitate air travel was also highlighted in the report as a means of restoring consumer confidence in air travel and reducing the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Digital health passports and contactless check-in and boarding procedures were among the solutions proposed.
The report emphasized the need for a coordinated and collaborative approach to the post-pandemic recovery of the aviation industry in Southeast Asia. By adopting a range of strategies, the region’s aviation industry could recover and contribute to the region’s overall economic growth.
The impact of the pandemic on the region’s aviation industry has been significant, with passenger numbers decreasing by 60% compared to the previous year. However, there are positive signs of recovery, with several countries in the region beginning to ease travel restrictions.
Thailand, for example, has recently announced plans to reopen to fully vaccinated travelers from certain countries without quarantine requirements starting in July. Vietnam is also planning to reopen international travel to select destinations later this year. The report has been welcomed by industry leaders, who have praised the proposed strategies and called for increased cooperation among stakeholders.
