THE metaverse market is experiencing rapid growth and by 2025, is projected to reach a market size of approximately $800 billion, with estimates suggesting it could surpass $1 trillion by 2030, according to the McKinsey report, “Value Creation in Metaverse”.

The gaming industry is at the forefront of driving significant revenue. Virtual gaming assets, such as in-game items and virtual real estate, already generate billions of dollars annually. It is predicted that the virtual goods market alone could reach $150 billion by 2025.

The entertainment sector is also leveraging immersive experiences and virtual events to engage audiences in new ways, followed by the retail industry where virtual storefronts and personalised shopping experiences are becoming increasingly prevalent, with estimates suggesting that virtual fashion and accessories sales could exceed $5 billion by 2025.

Within travel, the report highlights several compelling use cases. Virtual tourism, for instance, offers travelers the ability to explore destinations and landmarks virtually, providing a taste of the experience before making travel decisions. This immersive virtual exploration can enhance travel planning, inspire wanderlust, and attract new customers.

Furthermore, the metaverse enables the creation of virtual travel experiences, allowing individuals to participate in simulated adventures and activities from the comfort of their own homes. These experiences can range from virtual city tours and historical reenactments to virtual hiking or diving expeditions. By offering virtual travel experiences, travel companies can cater to a broader audience, including those who are physically unable to travel or prefer virtual alternatives.

The report also discusses the potential for metaverse-powered customer service in the travel industry. Virtual travel agents or concierges within the metaverse can provide personalized recommendations, answer queries, and assist travelers in real-time, enhancing customer satisfaction and streamlining the booking process. This virtual customer service approach has the potential to offer 24/7 availability, scalability, and cost-effectiveness for travel companies.

It also presents opportunities for travel advertising and sponsorship. Brands can leverage virtual spaces within the metaverse to promote destinations, accommodations, and experiences. Virtual events or conferences held within the metaverse can attract a global audience, creating new avenues for advertising and generating revenue.

However, the report acknowledges that the travel industry faces challenges in embracing the metaverse. Infrastructure requirements, data privacy, and seamless integration with existing travel systems are areas that need to be addressed. Collaboration between travel companies, technology providers, and policymakers is essential to create a sustainable and secure metaverse ecosystem.
