In a significant step for the online review industry, Amazon, Booking.com, Expedia Group, Glassdoor, Tripadvisor, and Trustpilot have announced the establishment of the Global Coalition for Trusted Reviews. This collaborative initiative brings together major players in various sectors to ensure the availability of trustworthy consumer reviews worldwide and combat the ongoing menace of fake reviews.
The inception of this coalition can be traced back to the first-ever Fake Reviews Conference held in October 2022 in San Francisco, organized by Tripadvisor, which served as a platform for industry leaders to address the challenges related to fake reviews. The result was the formation of a formal alliance dedicated to public education and the exchange of information to reduce review fraud.
The coalition has identified key focus areas to protect consumers and partners from fraudulent reviews:
Industry Alignment: Establishing common standards and definitions for identifying fake reviews and enhancing content moderation practices across the industry.
Best Practice Sharing: Defining industry best practices for hosting online reviews and sharing updated content moderation processes and techniques for detecting fake reviews.
Information Sharing: Exchanging information about the tactics and operations of fraudulent actors, particularly companies selling fake reviews to businesses looking to artificially enhance their reputations.
Advocacy: Collaborating with academia and public policy leaders to emphasize the value of authentic review content and supporting industry-wide efforts to combat fake reviews.
Amazon’s Vice President of Worldwide Selling Partner Services, Dharmesh Mehta, emphasised the coalition’s goal to ensure that every review accurately reflects customers’ experiences, saying, “Amazon is aggressively fighting fake review brokers to protect our customers and selling partners, but these fraudsters are a global problem, impacting multiple industry sectors. Through greater collaboration and sharing across industries, we can more effectively shut down fraudulent review activity, deter other bad actors from attempting to game our systems, and protect more consumers.”
Spencer Mott, Chief Security Officer at Booking.com, highlighted the importance of maintaining credibility for both travelers and partners, stating, “From machine learning fraud detection models to custom-made tooling for our teams of experienced moderators, we are continuously enhancing our efforts, including through collaborating with this coalition of like-minded platforms.”
CJ Allen, Vice President of Marketplace Experience & Trust at Expedia Group, stressed the significance of authentic reviews for travelers and the travel industry, saying, “Expedia Group takes pride in participating in this coalition to combat these fake actors, who pose a direct threat to our industry’s most valuable asset: trust.”
Glassdoor’s Director of Content and Community, Cara Barry, acknowledged the reliance of job seekers on anonymous reviews and ratings, saying, “Glassdoor’s moderation team is constantly evolving our multi-tier technological and human review processes to prevent fake reviews on our platform.”
Becky Foley, Vice President of Trust & Safety at Tripadvisor, highlighted the coalition’s commitment to maintaining the credibility of reviews, stating, “To further maintain the credibility and authenticity of reviews on our platforms, we aim to make it increasingly difficult for fraudulent actors who try to deceive our customers to operate online.”
Trustpilot’s Chief Trust and Consumer Officer, Carolyn Jameson, emphasised the importance of trust in online decisions and expressed optimism about the coalition’s potential impact, saying, “Greater collaboration and sharing of ideas across the reviews industry, through the Coalition for Trusted Reviews, will undoubtedly be a major boost in the global fight against fraud and deception.”
Through collaborative efforts, The Coalition for Trusted Reviews aspires to set new industry standards for preserving the authenticity of reviews, instilling confidence in consumers worldwide, with the members’ next meeting scheduled to take place in Brussels on December 5th and 6th, organized by Amazon.
