Relaxed visas, AI, and B2B loyalty programs bolster promising start to 2024

As the tourism industry sets its course for the year, Omri Morgenshtern, CEO of digital travel platform Agoda, sees 2024 as a promising period for travel enthusiasts worldwide. Speaking at the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2024 in Laos, Morgenshtern highlighted the industry’s positive momentum, building upon the successes of the previous year.

In 2023, significant growth was observed in the Asian tourism sector, with countries like Japan, South Korea, and India emerging as notable outbound travel markets. Morgenshtern emphasised this growth, particularly within Agoda’s network, indicating a promising trajectory for the travel industry.

Following discussions at the ASEAN Tourism Forum, Morgenshtern identified five key trends that are expected to shape the travel landscape in 2024:

Visa ease promotes travel accessibility

According to Morgenshtern, one notable trend is the increasing ease of visa requirements in popular and emerging markets. This move aims to reduce travel barriers and diversify inbound traffic. For instance, when Malaysia eased restrictions, there was a significant surge in searches from countries like India and China.

Morgenshtern predicts further relaxation of visa requirements, potentially leading to more destinations offering visa-free access to travelers.

Streamlined booking experiences

Morgenshtern says that travel providers are focusing on simplifying the booking process by integrating flights, accommodations, and activities into seamless packages. This approach caters to travellers’ preference for convenience and flexibility. With 3 out of 4 travelers booking tours, activities, and attractions within a week of their arrival date, it will be welcomed by travelers if convenient opportunities to book ahead are enabled.

He adds that as people come to expect travel planning within a single interface, providers will need to rise to the challenge by offering a ‘one-source’ travel concierge and cater to a higher demand for flexibility.

Leveraging AI for enhanced services

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to play a significant role in enhancing operational efficiency and customer experience. Morgenshtern explained that Agoda has embraced AI technologies to empower its team and improve performance across various business functions.

Looking ahead, he says that developments in AI are expected to drive further advancements in personalized services and streamlined operations. Morgenshtern predicts that in 2024, GenAI will continue to be the biggest opportunity for business, and he also added that he sees the short to medium term developments in this field as the most exciting.

Expansion of B2B loyalty programs

Morgenshtern emphasised that Business-to-Business (B2B) loyalty programs are gaining traction in the travel industry, with a focus on incentivising wellness and sustainable practices. These programs are poised to contribute to the growth of the sector, catering to travellers’ evolving preferences and values.

Morgenshtern cited a recent study by Mastercard that suggests a growing interest among travellers in earning rewards for wellness and sustainable practices, indicating a shift towards more environmentally conscious travel behaviors. According to the study, 69% of travellers are interested in earning rewards for wellness behaviors and two-thirds are eager to earn rewards for sustainable practices.

Evolution of travel fintech solutions

The intersection of financial technology (fintech) and travel is reshaping payment experiences for travellers, particularly in cross-border transactions. Fintech solutions facilitate seamless payments and offer a variety of financing options, making travel more accessible to a broader audience.

Morgenshtern believes that private sector innovation will accelerate this trend: “The private sector has an important role to play in fintech, because the tech and the speed can be pushed by the private sector. But ultimately, public and private sectors will need to work together on fintech solutions for seamless travel experiences.”

Morgenshtern concluded his outlook on 2024 by saying, “Fueled by more frictionless visa experiences, travel continues to gain pace. With technology playing an even bigger role in how people choose, book and pay for travel, 2024 promises to be a watershed year.”
