Travel distribution system Amadeus recently announced its acquisition of Vision-Box, a leading provider of biometric solutions catering to airports, airlines, and border control sectors. This strategic move marks a significant step towards enhancing the seamless traveller journey, with a focus on integrated biometric solutions.

Vision-Box’s expertise in biometric hardware and software solutions complements Amadeus’ existing portfolio, expanding its capabilities in border control. This acquisition aims to provide a comprehensive end-to-end passenger experience, from booking to airport arrival, border control, and boarding.

The integration of Vision-Box into Amadeus’ ecosystem aligns with the company’s vision of connecting the travel industry through seamless interoperability. By facilitating smooth collaboration between airports, airlines, and border control authorities, Amadeus aims to optimise operations and enhance the overall passenger experience.

Amadeus explains that the growing adoption of biometrics in border control reflects the industry’s shift towards digitalisation to improve travel experiences, address operational challenges, and meet regulatory requirements. The use of biometrics in border control is expected to expand significantly in the coming years – with the Biometrics Research Group estimating the global biometrics sector will grow to US$86.1B by 2028 from its projected 2023 value of US$47.8B.

Vision-Box is a fast-growing global business with expected revenues of €70 million and an estimated normalized EBITDA of close to €20 million in 2023. The acquisition, valued at approximately €320 million, involves the transfer of approximately 470 Vision-Box employees to Amadeus. Subject to regulatory approvals, the deal is expected to close in the first half of 2024.

Decius Valmorbida, President of Travel at Amadeus, highlighted the strategic value of the acquisition, emphasising the potential for accelerated growth in the biometrics industry.

Meanwhile, Miguel Leitmann, Founder & CEO of Vision-Box, expressed enthusiasm about the growth prospects following the integration with Amadeus. He emphasised the potential to create a digitally-integrated ecosystem that enhances user experience and operational efficiency across various travel touchpoints.

According to the findings of IATA’s Global Passenger Survey 2023, biometrics technology holds promise for airports, airlines, and passengers alike. The majority of passengers express willingness to embrace biometric data for streamlined airport processes, leading to improved on-time performance and enhanced customer service.
