Australia to phase out paper arrival cards by 2027

Australia is rolling out a nationwide digital arrival system, expanding on a Qantas app trial (running since October 2024 for flights into Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne, with Perth and Adelaide added by end of 2026) into a universal web-based Australia Travel Declaration available to all international travellers, regardless of airline, from 2027; paper cards will still be offered for those without digital access, and the government is backing the shift with over A$56 million in funding over four years as part of a broader push to modernize border processing amid forecast growth in visitor numbers from 8.8 million to nearly 11 million by 2030.

FAA bets on AI to cut U.S. flight delays by 2028

The FAA has awarded an $875 million contract to Air Space Intelligence for two AI-driven air traffic management tools—Smart, which will recommend real-time routing and departure adjustments to controllers, and FMDS, which will analyze schedules, weather, and airport capacity months in advance to predict traffic flow—both aimed at shifting the agency from reactive to proactive delay management ahead of a full system overhaul targeted for the end of 2028; while airlines have voiced support and experts agree the approach could reduce and localize delays, specialists caution the timeline is unrealistic given the many interdependent projects still needed, question the FAA’s recent decision to cut its controller staffing target before the technology is proven, and note that at least one industry critic believes airlines, not a centralized FAA system, are best positioned to manage their own flight operations.

Gen Z’s travel habits are reshaping loyalty programs, Agoda finds

Agoda’s 2026 Travel Outlook reveals that Gen Z travelers across Asia are treating travel as a frequent, experience-driven part of life, prioritizing cultural exploration, outdoor activities, and culinary discoveries, with 73% planning one to six trips a year and 86% favoring short stays of one to seven days. Sustainability is also a growing factor, as 38% of Gen Z travelers seek certified eco-friendly accommodations and 23% deliberately travel during off-peak periods to reduce their environmental footprint—trends that open opportunities for banks, airlines, and loyalty platforms to embed curated experiences, bundled packages, and sustainability-focused rewards directly into their booking ecosystems.

Agoda argues that loyalty providers can capture this shift by integrating flights, accommodations, and activities natively into their own apps, letting members search, book, and redeem rewards without leaving the platform, while also surfacing personalized, sustainability-aligned offers throughout the year. Damien Pfirsch of Rocket Travel by Agoda emphasized that making travel feel like a seamless extension of the loyalty experience—rather than a separate transactional step—will help partners deepen engagement and build stronger customer relationships. Agoda’s white-label travel infrastructure already powers such partner-branded experiences, including Southwest Airlines’ Rapid Rewards and China Airlines’ new StayMiles platform.
