Biometrics key to smarter digital travel, says new white paper

A recent white paper by SITA, titled ‘Face the Future,’ underscores the pivotal role of biometric technology in revolutionizing the air travel experience. With existing paper-based and manual processes struggling to keep pace, biometric-driven IT solutions offer a promising avenue for enhancing efficiency, safety, and passenger satisfaction.

It’s no secret that the global aviation industry has witnessed a surge in passenger numbers, with projections indicating a doubling of travelers by 2040. To address this demand, airports are undergoing extensive expansions and upgrades, especially in the tech department, with investments reaching billions of dollars.

For context, SITA points out that in 1930, there were only around 6000 passengers travelling by air. By 1934, this figure had risen to just under 500,000. Fast-forward to 2019 and it had exploded to 4 billion travelers. In fact the International Air Transport Association (IATA) projects 8 billion air travelers annually by 2040.

To prepare for this, 425 major construction projects (worth around US$450 billion) were already put underway at existing global airports. According to the Center for Aviation, the industry also invested in 225 new airport projects in 2022.

Stefan Schaffner, VP of Airports at SITA, elaborates on the value of biometrics: “SITA Smart Path biometrically enables every step of the passenger journey, providing a touchless and seamless experience from enrollment to boarding and beyond.” By leveraging facial and fingerprint recognition, airports can streamline processes, mitigate space constraints, and address staffing shortages.

The white paper delves into successful implementations of biometric solutions, such as the Star Alliance Biometric initiative and India’s DigiYatra program, both utilising SITA Smart Path. Additionally, SITA Flex and SITA Border Management are highlighted as widely adopted platforms, enhancing passenger processing and border control efficiency across numerous airports globally.

One notable innovation is SITA’s Digital Travel Credentials (DTC) solution, facilitating seamless border crossings with verifiable digital identities shared in advance. SITA’s involvement in industry initiatives like IATA’s One ID and ICAO’s DTC demonstrates its commitment to setting rigorous standards for biometric identity management.

A compelling case study featured in the white paper is the implementation of SITA DTCs in Aruba’s Happy One Pass program, enabling travellers to cross borders without physical documents. This illustrates the tangible impact of biometric technology on enhancing border security and passenger convenience.

The white paper underscores the imperative of prioritising privacy and adaptability in deploying biometric solutions, ensuring a safe and ethical transition to a biometric-enabled future of air travel. As global travel demand continues to rise, SITA’s white paper emphasises that embracing biometrics emerges as a pragmatic approach to meet the evolving needs of passengers and stakeholders alike.
