How co-sourcing is beating traditional outsourcing

Colombia-based 247 Travel Partner Desk (247tpd) reports that its travel-specialized co-sourcing model cuts operational costs by 40–50% — and up to 70% in high-cost markets like the US and Northern Europe — by embedding trained external teams that function as seamless extensions of a client’s own workforce. With 600+ multilingual professionals in Cali trained using Gallup’s strengths methodology, the company keeps staff turnover well below the industry’s typical 30–40%, delivering the kind of consistency and travel expertise that clients like Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, Air Europa, and Viajes El Corte Inglés rely on for everything from 24/7 customer service to IRROPS handling and claims resolution. The model sits between full outsourcing and in-house staffing, and can be deployed within weeks.

Alibaba just turned its AI into a full-service shopping assistant

Alibaba has fully integrated its Qwen AI app with Taobao’s entire catalog of over 4 billion products, letting users in China browse, compare, order, and track deliveries through natural conversation instead of keyword search. A Qwen-powered assistant is also now embedded directly inside the Taobao app. The move is a major step up from a limited trial earlier this year, with AI agents now handling order management, logistics, and after-sales service. Built on Alibaba’s Qwen model and trained on over two decades of the company’s own transaction data, the system has a personalization edge over global rivals like ChatGPT, which rely on third-party plug-ins for commerce.

Amadeus starts 2026 strong despite Middle East headwinds

Amadeus posted solid Q1 2026 results, with group revenue up 3.1% to €1.68 billion (7.9% at constant currency) and adjusted EBIT growing 6.6% at constant currency, though a flare-up in Middle East geopolitical tensions dampened March performance across all segments. Air IT Solutions was the standout, up 12% at constant currency, driven by passenger growth and customers adopting more solutions including the new Amadeus Nevio offering; Air Distribution and Hospitality also grew, though booking cancellations hit distribution volumes late in the quarter. Free cash flow rose 4.5% to €273.6 million, and the company is pushing ahead with a €500 million share buyback and its planned acquisition of biometrics firm IDEMIA Public Security. CEO Luis Maroto said the company still expects to meet its full-year 2026 guidance, while keeping a close eye on macro uncertainty.

Travellers are choosing destinations based on how they get there

Rome2Rio’s Q1 2026 snapshot — drawn from platform searches and a 3,100-person survey — finds that transport options are now shaping where people go, not just how they get there: 76% say transportation influences their destination choice, and nearly 40% arrive at Rome2Rio without a destination in mind. This “mobility visibility” trend is pushing demand toward secondary destinations, with searches surging for spots like Vlorë, Albania (+229%) and Split, Croatia (+107%), aligning with European Travel Commission data showing 41% of European travelers are actively seeking less-visited places. Multimodal travel is also going mainstream — 45% of Q1 searches returned multi-mode routes, and 60%+ of travelers would pick train over plane for journeys under 300 miles. Major events are amplifying the effect, with train searches to the Milan-Cortina Winter Games region up 565% year-on-year, and 52% of travelers planning to attend the North America football tournament intending to extend their trips beyond the host city.

Vio Travel gets a serious sustainability benchmark

Vio Travel has become the first destination management company in Asia to earn certification under the Preferred by Nature Standard for Sustainable Travel Activities V1.1 — a globally recognised GSTC standard — following an independent audit confirming 100% compliance across responsible management, people, nature, and climate pillars. The certification covers Vio Travel’s Indonesia operations and validates practices already embedded in the business, including fully paperless operations, plastic reduction, locally owned supplier partnerships, zero tolerance for forced or child labour, and cultural heritage protection. The award ceremony took place in Bali on April 30, and the company plans to roll out the same standards across its 15-country Asia-Pacific network. For travel agent and tour operator partners, the certification offers third-party assurance that their ground partner meets credible international sustainability standards.

Dida and WEX focus on travel’s fragmented payment problem

China-based travel distribution platform Dida Holdings and global payments firm WEX have announced a 7-year strategic partnership aimed at bridging the growing gap between how travel is discovered and how it gets paid for. As booking journeys become more fragmented — shaped increasingly by social platforms and recommendation engines — legacy payment infrastructure is struggling to keep up, especially across cross-border flows. The deal combines Dida’s distribution reach with WEX’s payment scale (around $90 billion in annual virtual card volume) to improve conversion rates, accelerate settlement, reduce transaction failures, and automate reconciliation for hotels, suppliers, and distribution partners alike.

Data Appeal and Mabrian unite to build the world’s biggest travel intelligence ecosystem

Florence-based Data Appeal Company (part of the Almaviva Group) has unveiled a new unified brand framework that brings together its AI-powered data platform with Mabrian — now its dedicated Tourism Destinations division — to create what it’s calling the world’s largest travel intelligence ecosystem for destination management. The combined offering covers air connectivity, market demand, traveller sentiment, tourism supply, spending impact, and sustainability, all supported by an expert advisory layer. The integration also folds in Data Appeal’s existing tools including Coach (digital reputation and revenue optimisation) and Location (spatial intelligence for territorial planning), forming a single end-to-end intelligence suite for destinations, travel companies, and adjacent industries. The consolidation process will continue through 2026 under newly appointed CEO Àlex Villeyra.
