Booking.com has released the fourth edition of its annual global LGBTQ+ travel research, highlighting key trends, experiences and challenges faced by LGBTQ+ travellers, especially those from the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.
This year’s findings emphasise a trend of greater self-empowerment among these travellers as they take proactive steps to find better fulfillment during their journeys.
Key insights from the research:
Booking.com’s research also underscores the ongoing challenges for LGBTQ+ travellers.
More than half (62%) of LGBTQ+ travellers from APAC have experienced discrimination while travelling. A significant portion expects discriminatory behavior from fellow travellers (63%) and locals at their destinations (65%). Consequently, 56% of respondents report feeling more insecure and self-conscious as LGBTQ+ travellers.
The findings show that LGBTQ+ travellers from APAC are meticulously planning their trips to avoid discrimination, which includes:
When it comes to flight preparations, 37% of LGBTQ+ travellers have had negative experiences with fellow passengers, and 43% fear discrimination from seatmates. As a result, 56% choose specific seats in advance to minimize interactions.
Additionally, LGBTQ+ travellers often adopt alternate personas to ensure their safety:
Booking.com’s research points out that the travel industry is making strides towards inclusivity, with 76% of LGBTQ+ travellers acknowledging increased comfort due to better industry practices. Booking.com’s “Travel Proud” programme has played a significant role, certifying over 5,404 properties in APAC, marking a 200% increase from last year.
This programme offers inclusive hospitality training to help accommodations better serve LGBTQ+ guests.
Arjan Dijk, CMO and Senior Vice President at Booking.com, commented, “We passionately believe that everyone should be able to travel and experience the world in their own unique way. Despite persistent challenges, it’s inspiring to see LGBTQ+ travellers embracing their lived experiences. While progress is being made, continued efforts are needed to ensure inclusive travel for all.”
Booking.com has also strengthened its commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusivity through partnerships with the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association (IGLTA), the Global Equality Fund, and the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center.
