KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has partnered with Facebook Messenger to launch a service that allow travellers to check-in, access boarding pass and receive flight status updates through the app.
This makes KLM the first global airline to provide these services on Messenger.
The new partnership makes it easy for travellers to find information in a single place, and it is available at the airport, enroute or at home.
KLM also expands its customer support through Messenger by offering live chat to customers with KLM staff if they have queries on bookings or to make last-minute travel plans. The live chat support is available in more than 12 languages.
The new social media service, which rolled out on March 30, will be made more widely available in the coming weeks.
The app will work wherever KLM and Messenger operate, including nearly 140 destinations around the world.
The KLM-Facebook partnership also marks the latest expansion of Messenger for Business, as first announced last year. Other business partners on this platform include Lyft, Uber, Hyatt Hotels and Resorts, and Walmart.
“We think Messenger is the best place to talk to the people, and increasingly the businesses people care most about. We are pleased to welcome KLM onto the expanding Messenger platform as the first airline partner,” said David Marcus, vice president of Facebook Messaging Products.
“Now, KLM customers will be able to have fast, contextual conversations about their flights, all from the comfort of an app they already know and love,” he added.
Facebook plans to partner with additional airlines in the near future.
Pieter Elbers, KLM president & CEO, said the new Messenger service was a perfect addition to KLM’s social strategy.
“We believe we should be where our customers are, and therefore Messenger and KLM are a good fit. Our customers feel comfortable sharing info with us via a more personal platform like Messenger.”
Last year KLM activated the Messenger button on its Facebook Page, allowing customers to contact the airline directly via private messaging.
“Cases increased by 40%, which shows customers appreciate this form of communication. We are now taking our service to customers a step further, offering them the option of receiving all relevant flight documents and information in a single Messenger overview,” added Elbers.
The new Messenger service is available to all KLM customers who book tickets via KLM.com and opt to receive information via Messenger. KLM has more than 15 million fans on Facebook. (See video below on how KLM Messenger works.)
