Looking at Q3 2023 travel behaviour to outline upcoming trends in 2024
04/03/2024 by Arvindh Yuvaraj

Richard Kocher, Senior Director, Media Insights & Planning, Expedia Group recently wrote a blog post highlighting a few new budding trends for 2024. Kocher says that by delving into the travel behaviors of Q4 2023, we can glean valuable insights into the upcoming travel landscape. From heightened international interests to strategic budget allocations, the data points to an interesting year for travel and hospitality.

Forward planning and budget boosts

A notable trend from Q4 2023 reveals travellers’ proactive approach to trip planning, particularly for international adventures in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region and the ever-popular city of Paris, France. Supported by GWI’s January 2024 Zeitgeist Study, which reports 67% of consumers aiming for equal or increased travel compared to 2023, the appetite for exploration is undoubtedly strong. Specifically, Kocher says that users frequenting Expedia display even greater enthusiasm, with 95% expressing intentions for elevated travel in 2024.

Moreover, financial readiness underscores travellers’ resolve, with 26% of consumers and 35% of recent Expedia visitors poised to bolster their travel expenditure this year.

Search surge and travel enthusiasm

According to Expedia’s data, towards the tail end of 2023, travel fervor surged, notably during the holiday season. Globally, search volumes witnessed an uptick during the last week of the year, reminiscent of the trend observed in 2022, with a notable 25% week-over-week spike. Leading this surge were Latin America (LATAM) and Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), both recording a 35% surge in search volumes, possibly fueled by Boxing Day shopping for travel deals.

Additionally, Cyber Monday and Travel Tuesday saw a 10% global search volume hike, with nearly 15% uptick in North America (NORAM).

APAC ascendancy and rising destinations

Kocher also highlights that the Asia Pacific region emerges as a focal point of travel interest, marking a robust recovery post-pandemic. November 2023 flight data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) underscores this trajectory, with APAC airlines experiencing a staggering 63.8% surge in international traffic compared to the previous year — the most substantial year-over-year (YoY) growth across regions.

Echoing this trend, Q4 search data reflects significant year-over-year growth in search volume for several APAC cities, including Guangzhou (85%), Hong Kong (35%), and Shanghai (35%). This burgeoning interest extends globally, with a substantial rise in searches from various regions to APAC cities, signaling the region’s increasing allure.

Kocher says that in light of these insights, businesses in the APAC travel sector are urged to optimise their listings to attract a diverse array of travellers. Leveraging advertising solutions can facilitate targeted outreach to millions of potential travelers worldwide, maximizing visibility and capitalizing on burgeoning demand.

Long-term planning persists

According to Kocher’s post, another noteworthy trend from Q4 2023 is the uptick in longer-term travel planning, evident in a significant global increase of over 15% in searches beyond the 180-day window.

This inclination towards extended planning is especially pronounced in EMEA, recording a 70% surge, alongside a 10% increase in NORAM. The sustained growth of longer search windows underscores robust traveler intent, with many planning trips months in advance.

The Parisian allure

As travellers set their sights on summer 2024, Paris emerges as a coveted destination, with future searches for travel during July and August witnessing a commendable 20% increase in Q4 2023. Notably, visitors from various regions exhibit intentions for extended stays, with a nearly 25% year-over-year increase in visitors from NORAM and LATAM, hinting at prolonged sojourns in the City of Lights.

Kocher also says that hotels and vacation rentals in Paris are encouraged to optimise their listings, accentuating key amenities and attractions to entice prospective guests eagerly planning their Parisian getaways.

Catering to travel tendencies

In alignment with seasonal preferences, Kocher’s post advises destinations to tailor their offerings, whether basking in sunny locales or embracing winter adventures. Highlighting seasonal appeal in advertising initiatives can leverage travellers’ inclinations, says Kocher, while competitive seasonal rates for vacation rentals can maximize booking opportunities and revenue potential.
