In 2013, the number of Airbnb searches from Singapore jumped 200% on the previous year. Globally, more than 11 million guests have stayed on Airbnb to date, it added.

Regional destinations are the preferred choice, with three out of the top five from Asia. Seoul tops the list, followed by Paris, London, Tokyo and Taipei.

Since the first guest booking in March 2009, Singapore travellers have paid an average of S$145 per room per night.

Airbnb managing director for Northeast Asia, Alan Chang, said Asia is one of the fastest growing regions for the company, and more travellers in the region are opting for unique accommodation.

“This trend is clearly catching on and as more people seek to travel beyond the beaten path, Airbnb offers travellers the chance to experience the real soul of a destination, while at the same time ensuring that they do not break the bank.”
