AI travel companion evolves from conversational tool to proactive travel problem-solver

Trip.com Group celebrated the second anniversary of its AI-powered travel companion, TripGenie, by launching two new features: the AI-driven Menu Assistant (released December 19, 2024) and the context-aware revamped Trip.com Widget (rolled out January 9, 2025). These innovations support TripGenie’s 2025 vision, “From Answers to Actions,” signaling a leap from a reactive chatbot to a proactive tool that anticipates and solves travel challenges.

Menu assistant: From language barrier to culinary adventure

For travellers, deciphering foreign menus has long been a source of stress. TripGenie’s Menu Assistant aims to eliminate this frustration. Integrated into the Trip.com app, this feature combines language models with cultural context. When a user scans a Thai menu, for example, TripGenie doesn’t just translate “แกงปูใบชะพลู” to “Tom Kha Seabass”— it deciphers the cultural nuances, explaining: “This dish features fresh seabass in a rich, flavorful coconut soup with young coconut meat. The creamy soup is infused with aromatic herbs and spices, creating a harmonious blend of sweet, sour, and savory flavors.”

The assistant goes further by addressing travellers’ implicit needs. A suggested prompt like “What’s the signature dish of this restaurant?” triggers tailored recommendations and simplifies decision-making. Later in 2025, a structured ordering interface will allow users to select dishes in-app and generate pre-written notes for waitstaff—turning fragmented decisions into a seamless flow.

Trip.com Widget: Intelligence that adapts to your journey

The redesigned, home screen-accessible Trip.com Widget leverages geolocation, chat history, and booking data to provide travellers with hyper-relevant and readily available support. The widget intuitively surfaces TripGenie’s tools:

  • Instant Menu Access: Launches the Menu Assistant.
  • Location-Aware Insights: Receives historical snippets and place highlights relevant to users’ surroundings.
  • One-Tap Global Travel Tools: Accesses real-time Translate and Currency Converter for international travel.

By shortening interaction paths, the widget reduces user effort compared to traditional app navigation, perfectly aligning with TripGenie’s mission to streamline every step of the journey.

Two years of innovation: From chatbot to travel ally

Since its debut on Feb 17, 2023, TripGenie has evolved from a conversational tool into a 24/7 problem-solving ally. The 2025 roadmap, themed “From Answers to Actions”, focuses on three key advancements, poised to further revolutionize personalised travel planning:

  1. Predictive Assistance: Proactively addressing needs—like suggesting flights based on past bookings or alerting users to local festivals aligned with their interests, setting a new standard for proactive travel support.
  2. Multi-Modal Integration: Expanding real-time voice translation and piloting photo/video-guided navigation for landmarks and transit hubs, pioneering a more immersive and intuitive travel assistance experience.
  3. Global Scalability: Adding rest Trip.com languages, democratizing AI-powered travel support for Trip.com’s global user base.

“Travellers juggle countless micro-stresses—deciphering menus, coordinating group trips, handling disruptions,” said Amy Wei, founder of TripGenie and Senior Product Director at Trip.com Group. “TripGenie’s mission isn’t to answer more questions; it’s to eliminate the questions entirely by solving problems before they arise. The Menu Assistant is just the first step.”
