WiT Community Blog: Andrea Traversone, Amadeus Capital Partners

With Planet Earth in lockdown, our industry at a standstill and many of us in self-isolation or quarantine at home, or grounded, this is our blog for you – it’s a way to share stories within our community, to form solidarity and foster a sense of belonging.

Short essays on what we are each doing, how we are getting through this darkest hour in travel, how are we handling withdrawal symptoms from travel, what we intend to do with this down time, a word we want to focus on, a wish we have or simply, an important topic you want to share with your travel friends at this time.

Andrea Traversone: I think more med-tech companies and pharma companies will go back to develop technologies for fast vaccine development

Three positive outcomes to look forward to

  1. I think – or hope –  the world will start to understand the huge difference between robust and anti-fragile – which is fundamental in a world which is more and more reliant on networks and yet there is very little system-thinking applied. (Recommended read: Antifragile: Things That Gain From Disorder)

  2. I think more med-tech companies and pharma companies will go back to develop technologies for fast vaccine development, which has been a forgotten and abandoned area because of the stupidly skewed economics of the pharma industry driven by the US reimbursement model. (Recommended Read: A Prescription For Change: The Looming Crisis in Drug Development) This is something that Bill Gates – who is always at least 10 years ahead of the curve – has been saying and, after tiring of not being heard, doing on his own (because you can when you are an owner of huge capital with a 100-year investment horizon). (Watch this video of Bill Gates calling it in 2015.)

  3. And finally I think the lasting memories will be that during these periods of worldwide emergency, there is something bigger that unites us all and that it is okay to acknowledge it and live it even in normal periods – the memes of this are many – for example, this one of a personal trainer leading quarantined Spanish citizens in a workout.

Note: We will be running this blog for as long as we need to, to get us through this. If you wish to contribute, please send your essays to Siew Hoon. Send images too, it’s your story.
